On December 3rd, 2024, the Waste Pickers Association of Nigeria (WAPAN) proudly participated in the validation workshop for the Abuja Urban Lab on Waste Management. This initiative, developed under the Covenant of Mayors in Sub-Saharan Africa (CoM SSA) program, is an ambitious step toward enhancing waste governance in the Federal Capital Territory. The workshop was generously funded by the European Union and German Development Cooperation (GIZ).
The WAPAN delegation, led by our President, Comrade Salisu Ali Yarima, actively engaged in the discussions. During the event, the significant progress made by the Urban Lab—guided by CoM SSA Country Manager Vanessa Vovor and technical advisor Toyeeb Arowona—was highlighted. The initiative’s focus on fostering partnerships directly aligns with Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 17: strengthening collaboration to achieve sustainable development.
The workshop brought together a diverse array of stakeholders, including the Abuja Environmental Protection Board (AEPB), Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), and the Satellite Towns Development Department (STDD). By uniting these entities under one umbrella, the Urban Lab is laying the groundwork for coordinated action in tackling Abuja’s waste management challenges.

Collaborative Solutions for Waste Governance
WAPAN used this platform to recommend a collaborative approach to addressing waste governance issues and attracting much-needed investment in waste management infrastructure. These recommendations are in line with Abuja’s Sustainable Energy and Climate Action Plan (SEACAP), which seeks to create inclusive, resilient, and low-emission urban systems.
By validating the governance framework for waste management, the workshop marked a monumental step toward achieving sustainable urban development. This effort not only strengthens the capacity for effective waste management in Abuja but also serves as a model for other cities striving for low-emission and inclusive waste infrastructure.

Commitment to Partnerships and Advocacy
WAPAN remains steadfast in its commitment to fostering partnerships, promoting inclusivity, and advocating for the rights and recognition of waste pickers. These individuals play a critical role in Abuja’s waste management ecosystem, and their contributions must be integrated into formal waste governance structures.
We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the Covenant of Mayors in Sub-Saharan Africa (CoM SSA), the European Union, GIZ, and all participating partners for their unwavering dedication to creating a cleaner and more sustainable future. Together, we are paving the way for a more inclusive and resilient urban landscape, ensuring that no one is left behind in the journey toward sustainable development.
Looking Ahead
As we reflect on the milestones achieved during the Abuja Urban Lab workshop, WAPAN is energized to continue championing the cause of sustainable waste management. By working hand-in-hand with stakeholders, we aim to ensure that the progress made becomes a lasting legacy for Abuja and its residents.
Together, we can build a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable future for all.
