WAPAN Shines at the Lagos Waste Forum: Advocating for Sustainable Waste Management

The Waste Pickers Association of Nigeria (WAPAN) proudly marked its presence at the prestigious Lagos Waste Forum, held at the Radisson Blu Hotel, GRA Ikeja. This landmark event brought together key stakeholders from across the waste management and circular economy sectors to discuss innovative approaches to tackling Lagos’ growing waste challenges.

Representing WAPAN at the forum was Mr. Adebisi Franklin, the Lagos State Coordinator, who led our delegation with enthusiasm and expertise. Demonstrating WAPAN’s unwavering commitment to sustainable waste practices and advocacy, Mr. Franklin took center stage as a panelist, engaging in vibrant discussions on pressing waste management issues.

Leading the Conversation on Waste Management

During the panel session, Mr. Franklin provided insightful perspectives on the critical role of waste pickers in Lagos’ waste management ecosystem. Highlighting the challenges faced by informal waste workers and the need for their integration into formal systems, he emphasized:

  • The importance of recognition: Waste pickers’ contributions to environmental sustainability and recycling must be acknowledged and valued.
  • Policy alignment: The need for inclusive policies that align with Lagos State’s Waste Management Master Plan to support waste pickers and improve waste recovery rates.
  • Partnerships and collaboration: Encouraging greater synergy between government bodies, private sector players, and the informal waste management community to build a robust and sustainable system.

Mr. Franklin’s eloquent advocacy resonated deeply with the audience, sparking constructive dialogue among the participants.

WAPAN’s Vision for a Cleaner Lagos

At the forum, WAPAN reiterated its vision of creating a cleaner and more sustainable Lagos by empowering waste pickers, fostering inclusivity, and driving investments into waste management infrastructure. The delegation’s active participation underscored WAPAN’s dedication to achieving a circular economy where waste is minimized, and resources are maximized.

The Lagos Waste Forum also provided an opportunity for WAPAN to network with other industry leaders, including representatives from the Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), private recycling firms, and civil society organizations. These interactions have laid the foundation for potential collaborations that will further WAPAN’s mission.

Gratitude and Moving Forward

WAPAN extends its sincere gratitude to the organizers of the Lagos Waste Forum for creating an inclusive platform to address critical waste management issues. We remain committed to advocating for the rights and welfare of waste pickers, ensuring they are recognized as vital contributors to the state’s waste management agenda.

As we continue to strengthen our presence and partnerships in Lagos, WAPAN looks forward to contributing even more significantly to the realization of a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable city. Together, we can turn waste into opportunity and create a thriving circular economy for the benefit of all.
