WAPAN President Meets with Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf
Comrade Salisu Ali Yarima, President of the Waste Pickers Association of Nigeria (WAPAN), recently met with the newly elected Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, to discuss the development and empowerment of waste pickers in the state. During the meeting, they addressed key issues such as capacity building, health and safety measures, and the formal recognition of waste pickers’ contributions to the state’s environmental management.
Governor Yusuf expressed his commitment to supporting initiatives that will improve the livelihoods and working conditions of waste pickers, acknowledging their crucial role in maintaining Kano’s cleanliness and contributing to the circular economy. Both leaders agreed to continue collaborating on policies and programs that will empower waste pickers and enhance their contributions to sustainable development in Kano State.

CSCHEI Media Chat Highlights

CLIMATE ACTION AFRICA FORUM 24
WAPAN Delegation to the Climate Action Africa Forum 2024, led by our esteemed Lagos Coordinator, Comrade Franklyn Adebisi, made a significant impact at the Landmark Events Centre in Lagos. The delegation represented the voice of waste pickers, highlighting their crucial role in driving environmental sustainability and promoting circular economy practices in Nigeria.
The event provided an excellent platform for WAPAN to engage with key stakeholders, share our experiences, and advocate for greater inclusion of informal waste pickers in climate action initiatives. We are proud of the contributions made by our delegation and the valuable insights shared during the forum.
Great WAPAN! Up Pickers! Together, we are making a difference in the fight against climate change and advancing sustainable development in Africa.

WAPAN AT NDC IMPLEMENTATION FRAMEWORK
The delegation of WAPAN ably led by the General Secretary of WAPAN, Mr. Suleiman Adama who represented the mandates of wastes pickers and the association. The event organized by the National council on climate change was attended by several important stakeholders to the Launch of the Nigeria NDC IMPLEMENTATION FRAMEWORK, Transcorp Hilton Abuja recently.

WAPAN & ABUJA URBAN LAB working visit to Lagos State
WAPAN was part of a delegation of the Abuja Urban Lab on a working visit to Lagos State to interact and study waste management with stakeholders. During the week long visit we visited LAWMA, LASEPA, Ikeja Local Government Council, Polysmart Recycling plant, LAWMA Composting Plant, WAPAN LAGOS Office and WAMASON office. In all we learnt that waste pickers are very well recognized and integrated in the waste management value chain in Lagos State. Kudos must go to our hardworking Coordinator in Lagos State Comrade Franklyn Adebisi for the great job he is doing for waste pickers and WAPAN in general. The visit has opened up more opportunities to scale up our advocacy and strategy for the betterment of waste pickers in Nigeria. Among the site visited were; 10-storey Olusosun landfill in Lagos… during the NILE UNIVERSITY/GIZ/EU sponsored Abuja Urban Lab working visit to Lagos State.

WAPAN LOST FINANCIAL SECRETARY.
In the early hours of 28th April, we received the shocking death of our beloved member in person of Alhaji Usman Bakawu . During his time, he has served amicably as the founding Coordinator North East and financial secretary of our great Association.
He’s been identified as a relentless and zealous change maker that works tirelessly to promote matters of recycling and waste management in his occupational pursuit.
We pray that Almighty Allah receive his soul in Jannah Firdaus, Ameen.

WAPAN MEETS WITH NESREA
Waste Pickers Association of Nigeria (WAPAN) Executive Committee, along with the President comrade Salisu Ali Yarima, had an introductory meeting with the Director-General of the National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency of Nigeria (NESREA), Prof. Aliyu Jauro, and his team. The meeting aimed to establish a collaborative partnership between WAPAN and NESREA to address environmental issues related to waste management in Nigeria. Prof. Aliyu Jauro appreciated WAPAN’s efforts in promoting sustainable waste management practices and recognized the crucial role of waste pickers in the recycling value chain. WAPAN shared its vision for empowering waste pickers and creating a cleaner and healthier environment. NESREA expressed its willingness to support WAPAN’s initiatives and work together to achieve common goals in waste management and environmental protection. The meeting laid the foundation for a productive partnership between the two organizations to drive positive change in the waste management sector in Nigeria.

The Waste Pickers Association of Nigeria (WAPAN) Executive Committee, led by the President, had an introductory meeting with the African Coordinator for the International Alliance of Waste Pickers, Amira Halabi. The meeting aimed to explore opportunities for collaboration and knowledge sharing in the field of waste management. Amira Halabi shared valuable insights on successful waste management initiatives from other African countries and emphasized the importance of empowering waste pickers. WAPAN expressed its commitment to promoting sustainable waste management practices and advocating for the rights of waste pickers in Nigeria. The meeting laid the groundwork for future partnerships and exchange of best practices to enhance waste management efforts in the region.

The event showcased the state-of-the-art recycling facility and its contribution to promoting sustainable waste management practices in Nigeria. The President commended Qi Hang for its commitment to environmental conservation and the circular economy. He emphasized the importance of such initiatives in creating employment opportunities for waste pickers and reducing environmental pollution. The event provided an opportunity for WAPAN to explore potential collaborations with Qi Hang in advancing waste recycling and empowering waste pickers across the country.

The occasion took the form of a dignified formal dinner, held in Kano State. Notably, the gathering was attended by distinguished individuals, including the President of the Waste Pickers Association of Nigeria (WAPAN) Comrade Salisu Ali Yarima, as well as representatives from the recently elected Nigeria Labor Congress (NLC). Throughout the event, the Executive Governor of Kano State actively participated in constructive discussions with the attendees, facilitating a productive exchange of ideas.
