WAPAN Commends Authorities for Swift Action Against Manhole Cover Thefts in Abuja

The Waste Pickers Association of Nigeria (WAPAN) has extended its commendation to the Nigerian Police Command and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Barr Nyesom Wike, for their decisive action in tackling the alarming issue of manhole cover thefts in Abuja. This proactive response, which has drawn public appreciation, resulted in the arrest of 50 suspects and the recovery of 25 stolen manhole covers and solar streetlights.

In a statement released on Tuesday, January 7, WAPAN applauded the role of a good Samaritan who promptly alerted authorities to the theft. This act of civic responsibility was highlighted by WAPAN’s President, Salisu Ali Yarima, who remarked, “This is the kind of vigilance we need to protect our communities.” The association emphasized the critical importance of community involvement in safeguarding public infrastructure.

WAPAN also expressed pride that none of those arrested were members of their organization, reaffirming the association’s commitment to upholding ethical standards among its members. As a key stakeholder in Nigeria’s waste management sector, WAPAN continues to advocate for responsible and ethical practices within the industry.

The Call for Continued Vigilance

The recent arrests underscore the need for continued collaboration between authorities and the public to combat theft and vandalism of public property. WAPAN urges all citizens to remain vigilant and proactive in reporting suspicious activities, as these actions contribute to creating safer and more sustainable communities.

Supporting Public Infrastructure Protection

WAPAN reiterates its readiness to work alongside government agencies and other stakeholders to foster a culture of responsibility and accountability. By prioritizing the protection of public assets, we can collectively ensure that essential infrastructure serves its purpose for the benefit of all Nigerians.

The association remains steadfast in its mission to empower waste pickers, promote environmental sustainability, and advocate for ethical practices across Nigeria’s waste management value chain.
