WAPAN Advocates for Inclusion at the 1st Nigeria Conference on Hydrogen

The Waste Pickers Association of Nigeria (WAPAN) proudly participated in the 1st Nigeria Conference on Hydrogen, organized by the Federal Ministry of Petroleum Resources and FOSSREA. This groundbreaking event brought together experts, policymakers, and stakeholders to explore the potential of hydrogen as a clean energy solution and its integration into Nigeria’s energy landscape.

WAPAN’s representation at the conference underscored our commitment to ensuring that waste pickers are recognized as an integral part of the hydrogen waste management framework. During the discussions, we strongly advocated for the development of a robust policy framework that incorporates waste pickers into the structure, ensuring efficiency, inclusivity, and sustainability in hydrogen-related waste management.

Advancing the Vision for a Cleaner Future

The conference provided a platform to discuss the significant role waste management plays in the broader context of clean energy solutions. WAPAN emphasized the need for:

  • Recognition and integration of informal waste workers: Waste pickers are essential in managing the waste streams that could potentially support hydrogen production and waste-to-energy initiatives.
  • Collaboration among stakeholders: By working together, government bodies, private enterprises, and informal workers can create a unified approach to hydrogen waste management.
  • Capacity building and investment: Strengthening the skills and resources available to waste pickers to enable them to contribute effectively to hydrogen-related waste management.

Looking Ahead

WAPAN is eager to collaborate with other stakeholders in realizing the aims and objectives of this transformative project. We believe that a holistic approach, rooted in inclusivity and sustainability, is key to harnessing the full potential of hydrogen as a clean energy source.

As Nigeria takes bold steps toward a cleaner and greener future, WAPAN remains committed to advocating for the rights and roles of waste pickers, ensuring their contributions are valued in shaping innovative energy solutions. Together, we can build a sustainable energy ecosystem that benefits all.
