Waste Pickers Association of Nigeria (WAPAN) Condemns Total Ban on Waste Picking; Advocates for Restructuring and Strategizing
Abuja, 12th September 2023 – The Waste Pickers Association of Nigeria (WAPAN) expresses its deep concern and strong disapproval of recent calls for a total ban on waste picking activities in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja. Such a blanket ban would have serious negative implications for our communities, the environment, and the livelihoods of waste pickers.
Waste pickers, often referred to as “baban bola” or “scavengers,” play a crucial role in combating climate change and maintaining environmental cleanliness. Their contributions are vital to the local economy, and through their honest and diligent work, they support their families while providing a valuable service to society.
“We acknowledge that there have been isolated incidents involving criminal activities within waste picking communities. However, we firmly believe that these issues can be effectively addressed through a comprehensive and sustainable approach rather than resorting to a complete ban,” WAPAN stated.
WAPAN advocates for a restructuring and strategizing of waste picking activities that benefits both people and the environment. Our proposed solution includes:
- Education Programs: Implementing education and awareness programs for waste pickers.
- Standardized Operating Guidelines: Establishing clear and standardized operating procedures.
- Task Force Creation: Forming a task force within the waste picking community to oversee activities.
- Formal Identification Processes: Introducing formal identification systems for waste pickers.
- Robust Monitoring System: Implementing an effective monitoring and reporting mechanism.
This multifaceted approach aims to address the root causes of issues associated with waste picking and create a safer, more sustainable waste collection and management system. By supporting and empowering waste pickers, we can ensure the safety and security of our communities, the well-being of genuine waste pickers, and the preservation of our environment.
WAPAN appreciates the efforts of security agencies, media outlets, and environmental authorities in addressing these concerns. We value their willingness to collaborate with us in finding a balanced and effective solution to the complex issue of waste picking in Nigeria.
WAPAN remains committed to working closely with all stakeholders to ensure that waste picking activities are carried out responsibly, benefiting our society while preserving our environment.
