WAPAN’s Role in EU’s New Projects: A Step Towards Sustainable Development

On March 27, 2024, a significant milestone was achieved in Nigeria’s journey towards sustainable development with the launch of two groundbreaking projects by the European Union: the Small Hydro Power Development for Agro-industry Use (SHP-DAIN) and Advancing Nigeria’s Green Transition to Net Zero through Circular Economy Practices. Represented by Secretary Suleiman Adamu, the Waste Pickers Association of Nigeria (WAPAN) played a key role in these important initiatives.

The European Union has committed 9 million euros over three years to these projects, which will be executed by the United Nations Industrial Organization (UNIDO). The launch event, held in Abuja, was marked by the official inauguration of the steering committees and the presence of various stakeholders, including officials from the Ministry of Power and State representatives.

Key Highlights from the Launch Event:

  • Official Launch: Nigerian Minister of Power, Adenayo Adelabo, inaugurated the projects and emphasized the importance of harnessing Nigeria’s abundant energy resources through decentralized systems. He expressed enthusiasm for ongoing collaboration with the EU and UNIDO on small hydropower and energy solutions.
  • EU’s Commitment: Massimo De Luca, EU Head of Cooperation, highlighted the EU’s dedication to Nigeria’s green transition. He underscored that the green transition is a core focus of the EU Global Gateway Strategy, aiming to foster sustainable and trusted connections that benefit both people and the planet.
  • Project Objectives:
  • SHP-DAIN: This subproject aims to enhance small hydropower capacity, boost agricultural productivity, and improve livelihoods, thereby strengthening food security and job opportunities.
  • Green Transition through Circular Economy Practices: This subproject focuses on managing used off-grid energy equipment and plastics through circular economy practices, aiming to reduce pollution and greenhouse gas emissions.
  • Stakeholder Involvement: The projects will involve multiple stakeholders, including Federal Ministries, state governments, and various associations. WAPAN, alongside organizations such as the Renewable Energy Association of Nigeria (REAN) and the Waste Management Association of Nigeria (WAMASON), will contribute to the project’s success through their expertise in waste management and recycling.
  • Support and Collaboration: Nigerian Minister for Environment, Balarabe Abbas Lawal, and UN Resident Coordinator in Nigeria, Mohamed Malick Fall, both expressed their support for the projects. They emphasized the importance of collaborative efforts in managing electronic waste, mini-grid systems, and other critical areas.

The launch concluded with the formation of the Project Steering Committees (PSC) for both projects and technical sessions led by the project managers. WAPAN’s participation in these initiatives marks a significant step forward in advancing Nigeria’s sustainability goals and reinforcing the role of waste pickers in the broader context of environmental conservation.

As we move forward, WAPAN is excited to contribute to these transformative projects, supporting Nigeria’s green transition and promoting a circular economy that benefits our environment and communities.
