Strengthening Waste Pickers’ Role in Nigeria’s Circular Economy: A Strategic Meeting by WAPAN

The Waste Pickers Association of Nigeria (WAPAN) recently convened a strategic meeting to address key challenges and explore ways to enhance the public perception and operational efficiency of waste pickers across the country. Waste pickers play an indispensable role in Nigeria’s recycling industry, contributing to over 90% of recovered materials through their tireless efforts. Recognizing their value, the meeting focused on identifying immediate strategies to support and empower these unsung heroes of Nigeria’s circular economy.

Key Strategies Identified:

  1. Membership Registration Support: To strengthen the network of waste pickers, it was proposed that membership registration be supported by recycling collection companies within the Recyclers Association of Nigeria (RAN). This collaboration will formalize their roles and improve their visibility and credibility.
  2. Legal Occupation of Lands by Clusters: The meeting highlighted the need for waste picker clusters to secure legal occupation of land, either through renting or in-kind exchanges. This would provide them with designated spaces to operate, enhancing their organization and efficiency.
  3. Provision of Proper Kits and Protective Gear: Improving the safety and professional appearance of waste pickers is crucial. The strategy includes providing proper kits and protective gear, which will not only protect their health but also positively impact public perception.
  4. Dialogue with Government Agencies: One of the most critical strategies discussed was the importance of engaging in meaningful dialogue with relevant government agencies. By fostering strong relationships with policymakers, WAPAN aims to advocate for the rights and recognition of waste pickers, ensuring they are included in national strategies for waste management and the circular economy.

The Vital Role of Waste Pickers in Nigeria’s Economy
Waste pickers are the backbone of Nigeria’s recycling industry, and their contribution is immense. For instance, a single 20-ton load of recyclable plastic waste directly supports 52 families—from collection and sorting to loading. In comparison, farming 4.5 hectares of land for 180 days to produce 250 bags of rice would employ only 15 people, with each earning just 1,000 NGN daily.

It is clear that waste pickers are integral to maximizing Nigeria’s circular economy market. By implementing the strategies identified in this meeting, WAPAN aims to enhance the livelihoods of waste pickers and ensure their essential role is recognized and supported.

Stay connected with WAPAN as we continue to advocate for the inclusion and empowerment of waste pickers, driving sustainable change in Nigeria’s waste management sector.
