On August 20th, 2024, the National President of the Waste Pickers Association of Nigeria (WAPAN), Comrade Salisu Ali Yarima, delivered a compelling presentation at the One-Day Consultative Forum on the Development of a National Digital Repository for Waste Pickers, held at the Abuja Continental Hotels (Sheraton).
This event, organized by the International Labour Organization, the Federal Ministry of Environment, Nigeria, and Tearfund Nigeria, marks a significant advancement in recognizing and empowering waste pickers across the country. The forum aligns perfectly with WAPAN’s ongoing national data capture initiative, which has already registered over 13,000 waste pickers, including 2,500 women, who play a crucial role in recycling efforts and environmental conservation.
In his address, Comrade Yarima emphasized the urgent need for government support and protection for waste pickers, who are often marginalized and overlooked. He highlighted the tragic loss of life among waste pickers due to inadequate safety measures and called for immediate action to integrate waste pickers into the formal waste management system, ensuring their safety and dignity.
The forum also received commendations from the Representative of the Honorable Minister of Environment, Mrs. Omotunde Adeola, Director of Pollution Control and Environmental Health at the Federal Ministry of Environment, who praised WAPAN’s website as a model of expertise and coordination. Prof. Abdulhameed Danjuma Mambo from Nile University of Nigeria also lauded WAPAN’s efforts in promoting sustainable waste management practices and fostering collaborations that benefit informal waste pickers.
As we continue working towards an inclusive and sustainable future, WAPAN remains committed to supporting initiatives like the Digital Repository, ensuring that waste pickers are registered, recognized, and valued as indispensable partners in environmental conservation and economic growth.
Other key WAPAN members present included Ali Usman Yakasai and Dr. Dorathy Sani.
