WAPAN Members to Participate in AEPB and UNIDO’s Training on Sustainable Plastic Value Chains

The Waste Pickers Association of Nigeria (WAPAN) is pleased to announce its participation in an upcoming training program organized by the Abuja Environmental Protection Board (AEPB) in collaboration with the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO). This initiative, under the project titled “Promoting Sustainable Plastic Value Chains Through Circular Economy Practices,” is set to take place in the Jabi District of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

Training Objectives and Importance

The training program is a significant step toward enhancing the capacity of waste workers in the FCT, focusing specifically on the handling of single-use plastics. The key objectives are to equip participants with the skills and knowledge necessary for effective solid waste management and to promote sustainable recycling activities within the Jabi District. This initiative aligns with global efforts to adopt circular economy practices, which emphasize reducing waste, reusing materials, and recycling products to create a more sustainable environment.

WAPAN’s Role and Participation

In response to AEPB’s invitation, WAPAN has been requested to provide twenty (20) waste workers, including women, to participate in this training. The selected trainees are expected to have strong communication skills, which will be crucial during the pilot phase of plastic waste collection in the Jabi District. WAPAN is committed to ensuring that our members are well-prepared to take full advantage of this opportunity, which will not only enhance their professional capabilities but also contribute to the broader goal of sustainable waste management in Abuja.

Why This Training Matters

The focus on single-use plastics is particularly important given the environmental challenges associated with plastic waste. By participating in this training, WAPAN members will be at the forefront of efforts to mitigate the impact of plastic waste on our environment. The skills and knowledge gained will empower them to contribute more effectively to the recycling process, reduce the environmental footprint of plastic waste, and support the development of a circular economy in Nigeria.

Commitment to Sustainability and Empowerment

This training program underscores WAPAN’s ongoing commitment to the professional development of its members and the promotion of sustainable waste management practices. By collaborating with AEPB and UNIDO, we aim to ensure that our members are equipped with the latest knowledge and techniques in waste management, particularly in the context of plastic waste. This initiative also reflects our broader mission to empower waste pickers, providing them with opportunities to enhance their livelihoods while contributing to environmental sustainability.

Looking Ahead

As WAPAN prepares to send our members to this crucial training, we are optimistic about the positive impact it will have on our community and the environment. We believe that the knowledge and skills gained from this program will not only benefit the participants but will also have a ripple effect, improving waste management practices across the FCT.

Conclusion

The collaboration between AEPB, UNIDO, and WAPAN represents a significant step forward in promoting sustainable waste management practices in Nigeria. We are proud to be part of this initiative and are confident that our members will emerge from this training better equipped to contribute to the circular economy and the overall well-being of our communities.
